Breastfeeding is the first step in motherhood and can be overwhelming because you want everything to go just right.

While your doctor and well-wishers will give you tons of advice on what to do and what not to do, you can never be sure of anything until, of course, you actually start breastfeeding. Here are some simple tips that will help you breastfeed effectively and for as long as your child demands it.

- Begin breastfeeding about an hour after your delivery.

- Hold your baby the right way while breastfeeding. Hold your baby's tummy towards your stomach and your baby's chin to your breast.

- Your baby's mouth should cover your entire nipple, especially the areola.

- Don't let your baby feed from just one breast. Switch side the moment your baby falls off one breast.

- Rub a few drops of breast milk onto your nipples and let it air dry. This prevent your nipples from getting too dry and cracking.

- It is essential to drink lots of water and follow a good diet recommended by your doctor.

- Avoid medication while breastfeeding, unless advised by the doctor.

- Your baby can comfortably survive on just breast milk for the first five to six months. Start your baby on semi-solid food only once your doctor tells you to.
